New year goals!

We are well and truly into 2020 and what a year it has been so far! Have you created a list of new years resolutions? Are these resolutions something that you generally stick to, or do they fizzle out by the end of January?

The SMART method has been around for as long as I can remember however it is something that can take time to master. So, what is SMART.

Specific

The goal needs to be clearly defined to ensure you focus on exactly what needs to be done. For example, instead of saying, "I would like to lose weight"which is very general, the more specific goals would be "I would like to lose 3% body fat".

Measurable

The chosen goal must be able to be measured to track your progress and ultimately stay motivated. This means that you need to identify the physical part of your goal i.e. see, hear and feel to measure your goal against something. For example, "I want to be healthy" can't be measured against anything, "I want to eat 2 more servings of vegetables with my meals" is measurable against the vegetables you currently eat.

Attainable

Is your goal attainable? Can you achieve your goal? You will need to take into account all your current circumstances such as work, social life, family and determine how important your goal is within the parameters of your life and then determine how it can be achieved with all your responsibilities. For example, "I want to train three times a week".

Relevant

Is your goal appropriate to what is being done or considered?

Time Bound

Setting a time frame is an important part to setting your goal. You need a deadline to stay focused on the goal at hand so that you don't get distracted and you stay focused on that goal. For example, "I would like to lose 3% body fat in 12 weeks".
